It spawned a 2004 movie starring Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep, and Jude Law as Snicket that grossed $209 million worldwide. The series comprises thirteen books, with the last appearing in 2006, plus a series of stand-alone books about Snicket himself. Snicket narrates the books, acting as the children’s biographer. ![]() Olaf treats them badly and tries to steal their inheritance. In it, Myers explores how one single decision can change a person's life. The book was “Monster,” by Walter Dean Myers. The complex novel tells the story of Steve Harmon, a young man on trial for murder. It wasn't until college that a YA book would really speak to Thomas. Omar akkad american war7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() And he’s cannily imagined Sarat, who is at once a caring daughter and sibling, freedom fighter, and sponge for the wisdom of one old-timer who dispenses tales about occupations decades past. El Akkad, a journalist who’s reported from hot spots in the war on terror, has a knack for the language of officialdom: news reports, speeches, history books, and the like that provide background for the various catastrophes that have befallen the country. But in the years tracked by the novel, Sarat becomes a daring young woman who leads a resistance against the Northern military. (South Carolina, attacked by a weaponized virus, is “a walled hospice.”) Among the refugees is Sarat, who as a young girl in 2075 escaped a much-diminished Louisiana (climate change has swallowed the coasts) with her family to what seems like an endless occupation. Southern states have taken up arms to protest a Northern ban on fossil fuels, and the war-torn secessionist “Mag” (Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia) has forced civilians to herd in refugee camps. A dystopian vision of a future United States undone by civil war and plague.Įl Akkad’s debut novel is set during the tail end of the 21st century, with the North and South at it again. ![]()

![]() This paper is an analytical approach to James’s The Turn of the Screw which highlights the contradictory interpretations, as well as the ambiguity of the novella. The boy, Miles, dies in the governess’s arms during the culmination of a psychic battle between the governess and the ghost of Peter Quint. The girl, Flora, denies having seen the wraiths and, apparently hysterical, is sent to her uncle in London. The new governess has profound suspicions that the children are involved with the ghosts she confronts the children individually and during that inquiring one of the apparitions appears to the governess, bringing the action to a calamity. The apparitions are those of Peter Quint, a man formerly employed in the household, and Miss Jessel, the previous governess. The story focuses on a young, naïve governess who is confronted by a pair of ghosts that she suspects is corrupting the two young children in her charge. It begins in an old house on Christmas Eve. The Turn of the Screw is an intense psychological tale of terror. ![]()

Last Stop by Lou Harper7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() I really liked this story, though I did have a small issue with the dom/sub aspect the author included in Sam and Jay’s relationship. As the danger to both Sam and Jay gets closer, can Sam outwit the man that’s after him and keep Jay safe? Jay is stubborn though and no matter how much he tries Sam can’t shake Jay after a while he just stops trying. Jay falls easily into Sam’s routine and when their relationship turns sexual, Jay discovers a side of himself he never knew existed.īut when Sam’s past catches up with him, he knows he needs to let Jay go before he gets hurt. When he meets Sam, their attraction is instant and Jay just sees that as a bonus. ![]() When he finds himself needing to move on again and he lands nearly right at the door of Sam’s diner, the ‘help wanted’ sign in the window just seems like fate. ![]() ![]() He moves from town to town, doing whatever is necessary to get a ride or a meal. Jay drifts along in life where the wind takes him. He knows it’s not a good idea to get involved with Jay in any way, but the more time he spends with him, he finds himself drawn to Jay and he doesn’t want to let him go. So he’s totally unprepared for Jay Colby, whose constant chatter and effervescent personality is like a bright ray of sunshine in a package that Sam just cannot resist. He runs a diner in a small Montana town and he’s pretty content with the easy going, quiet of the town. Sam Mayne has very little excitement in his life and that is just the way he likes it. ![]()

![]() Like in the first book, this one spends a lot of time exploring the aftermath of World War I on the people who lived through it. Soon she realizes her case is tied up with a series of mysterious poisonings that are happening. The plot: Maisie Dobbs, a private investigator in London after World War I, is hired by a wealthy businessman to find his adult daughter, who’s gone missing. ![]() I really wish I hadn’t read my review, because before that the dialogue in this book hadn’t bothered me, and after, it really, really did. I thought that was the only reason, but then halfway through Birds of a Feather I went back and read my review of the first one, and then suddenly remembered how annoying I’d found the author’s style of writing dialogue. Why I stopped reading the series: Clearly, the first book didn’t make much of an impression on me. ![]() I thought I remembered that these took place after World War II, but that was actually incorrect–so, nothing. What I remembered about this series prior to reading this book: Absolutely nothing. ![]() |
